About the position


The Packaging Engineer 2 at Smith+Nephew will play a crucial role in the Product Development Team, focusing on the design and development of innovative packaging systems for medical devices, particularly in the field of sports medicine. This position involves collaboration with cross-functional teams to ensure successful new product launches and the implementation of packaging solutions that meet regulatory standards and customer needs.


Responsibilities




  • Design and develop sterile and non-sterile packaging systems for new product development and existing product lines.
  • ,

  • Coordinate and monitor packaging projects from inception through implementation.
  • ,

  • Establish project schedules and prepare periodic project reports.
  • ,

  • Define packaging-related design inputs and requirements through consultations with healthcare professionals.
  • ,

  • Communicate effectively with multi-functional team members including R&D, Marketing, Clinical, Regulatory Affairs, Quality Assurance, Purchasing, and Operations.
  • ,

  • Develop protocols and reports for packaging feasibility studies and design verification for new products.
  • ,

  • Engage and work effectively with packaging suppliers.
  • ,

  • Prepare reports/documentation using good documentation practices and communicate results to the team.
  • ,

  • Create packaging costs for COGS budget in each applicable business phase.
  • ,

  • Create, review, and approve Engineering Change Requests for packaging design changes.
  • ,

  • Work with manufacturing process teams to implement new design changes.
  • ,

  • Support Corrective and Preventative Actions (CAPA) projects as necessary.
  • ,

  • Assist with business initiative packaging projects as needed.
  • ,

  • Initiate purchase requisitions for prototypes, tooling, and other project-related expenses.


Requirements




  • Bachelor's degree in Packaging Engineering/Science or related technical discipline.
  • ,

  • Minimum two years' experience in packaging engineering related to medical device or healthcare product packaging, or one year with a Master's degree.
  • ,

  • Equivalent experience working for packaging component/material suppliers or in other packaged goods industries.
  • ,

  • Proficient in CAD software for designing packaging components, with SolidWorks proficiency highly preferred.
  • ,

  • Understanding of FDA, GMP, and ISO Guidelines preferred.
  • ,

  • Understanding of ASTM and ISTA packaging test methods preferred.


Nice-to-haves




  • Experience with international travel for packaging projects.
