This is a part time (20 hours a week) Outpatient Pharmacy Technician position and will require some weekend work.Customer Service & Patient Care:
  • Promptly greets patients and families in person and by telephone with a friendly and helpful attitude.
  • Answers medication-related inquiries, requests authorization for refills, and provides guidance on prescription pick-up.
  • Responds efficiently to inquiries by health care providers with pharmacy questions.
  • Refers inquiries to the pharmacist as needed.
  • Accesses translation services as needed to ensure optimal communication with patients whose language is other than English.
Prescription Processing:
  • Receives and processes prescription orders, and continually updates patient information verifying accuracy.
  • Manages the administrative responsibilities for faxing, filing, and/or documenting in medical record for non-electronic prescriptions,
  • MassPAT PMP requirements, 340B eligibility, or other pertinent procedures.
  • Offers every patient the opportunity to ask questions to the pharmacist about their medications. Ensures compliance with all regulations.
Insurance & Billing Support:
  • Determines and updates patient's insurance information, calls insurance companies to verify coverage, processes claims through the patient's insurance.
  • Investigates and resolves prescription issues.
  • Collaborates with the pharmacist and prescribers to formulate a solution, such as an alternative medicine or co-pay discount program.
  • Communicates directly with patients providing clarification for prescription or co-pay issues.
Medication Preparation:
  • Measures and counts medications and prepares and affixes medication labels for dispensing under pharmacist supervision.
  • Compounds simple or complex non-sterile medications in accordance with established policies, procedures and professional standards.
Medication shipping:
  • Assembles packages or boxes containing one or more units or types of medications for shipment and may also label packages accordingly.
  • Follows procedures to check prescriptions, labels, patient information, and delivery information for accuracy.
Inventory
  • Management: Maintains pharmacy inventory by monitoring medication and supplies stock levels, anticipating needed medications and supplies, and removing outdated/expired drugs.
  • Places and expedites orders, receives orders, rotates medications, restocks supplies.
  • Ensures the proper storage of all medications in accordance with policies and procedures.
Compliance:
  • Complies with all federal, state, and local pharmacy regulations to ensure a safe, accurate, and compliant dispensing environment.
  • Performs routine quality control, cleaning and equipment maintenance tasks according to established procedures and schedules.
  • Prepares and maintains related logs and records.
  • Maintains neatness and organization of work area. Adheres to all privacy, infection-control, and annual competency requirements in accordance with hospital policies, accreditation standards, and regulatory requirements.
Workflow Optimization:
  • Supports process improvements to enhance efficiency, including leveraging pharmacy technology and automation.
  • Collaboration with Healthcare Teams:
  • Works closely with pharmacists, providers, and other healthcare professionals to ensure seamless and timely medication delivery to patients and departments.
  • Participates in training and orientation of new technicians and pharmacy students.
  • Perform other duties as required by the position or as assigned by supervisor.
Requirements:
  • Current registration as a Pharmacy Technician by the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy.
  • Current certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board or National Healthcare Association.
  • Completion of a Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy approved training program or a minimum of 500 hours worked as a pharmacy technician trainee.
