The effective specialist is seen as an equal partner with both novice and experienced teachers, spending the majority of their time working in classrooms (to model, observe, and debrief lessons). Overall, the job of the writing specialist is to build the capacity of school staffs to meet the learning needs of all students. Provide professional development and guidance for teachers to enhance their content knowledge and instructional strategies. They work side by side with teachers as thought partners.

SUMMARY: With a focus on enhancing writing instruction the writing coach will collaborate with SERRC, SHI and other coaches to support extensive job embedded, on-going professional learning through a grant-funded project: Raven Writes. Coaches will become certified in Cultural Proficiency and lead workshops on the cultural proficiency framework in all elementary schools. Coaches will also be trained in the Self-Regulated Strategy Development writing approach, and support teachers in implementing SRSD within the context of the Raven Writes project. Each summer, coaches will be asked to staff Summer Teachers Writing Institutes with exemplary PD experts who will work directly with 2 groups of 20 teachers. Coaches will also coach and collaborate with teachers in a Communities of Practice model to develop writing kits for each grade level, incorporating culturally relevant and responsive best practices in writing instruction. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

- Bachelors degree required, prefer degree in education.
- Requires valid Alaska teaching certificate.
- Five years of successful teaching experience.
- Knowledge of many teaching strategies for diverse students.

- Designs, coordinates and/or delivers leadership and instruction to teachers and paraprofessionals.
- Uses coaching models, work with teachers as a group and one-on-one in their classrooms to ensure success and to help them implement new learning strategies.
- Provides training and support to teachers, paraprofessionals and district tutors.
- Identifies, recruits, and enrolls teachers for program participation.
- Regularly observes instruction in classrooms.
- Maintains regular collaboration with SHI, TLS, and SERRC staff (including the JSD Raven Writes Writing Specialist) to ensure grant goals and initiatives are embedded in work with staff.
- Interprets, as appropriate, test results and statistical data concerning literacy to the administration, staff and public at large.
- Record and report data on writing kit usage by teachers and students, and report to the writing specialist - including when supplies are needed.
