We are seeking an enthusiastic and knowledgeable Garden Centre Assistant with a strong background in horticulture and retail merchandising to join our team. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with plant care, customer service, and product presentation. You’ll play a key role in maintaining the visual appeal of the garden centre, supporting plant health, and delivering exceptional service to our customers.
Key Responsibilities:
Horticulture & Plant Care:
- Maintain the health, appearance, and inventory of plants through watering, pruning, feeding, pest control, and general care
- Identify common plant diseases and pests, and take appropriate action as needed
- Advise customers on plant selection, care instructions, and gardening techniques
- Receive and unpack plant deliveries; check quality and report any issues
Merchandising & Retail Operations:
- Create visually appealing displays to showcase seasonal products, promotions, and plant collections
- Rotate stock and maintain full, well-organised, and clean shelves and displays
- Assist with pricing, tagging, and signage for plants and related products
- Work with the manager to plan and implement merchandising strategies
- Support inventory counts and restocking processes
Customer Service:
- Provide knowledgeable, friendly, and professional service to customers
- Help customers with purchases, loading, and carry-outs as needed
- Handle customer inquiries and complaints efficiently and courteously
- Maintain a welcoming, tidy, and safe environment in all areas of the garden centre
- Serve customers using the tills
Qualifications and Experience:
- 1-2 years experience working in a garden centre, nursery, or horticultural retail environment preferred but not essential
- Solid understanding of plants, plant care, and garden products
- Experience in visual merchandising or retail display preferred
- Excellent communication and customer service skills
- Ability to lift heavy items and work on your feet for extended periods
- Flexibility to work weekends, holidays, and peak seasonal periods
Preferred Skills:
- Horticulture qualification (e.g., RHS, HNC, or similar) is a plus
- Forklift or pallet truck experience an advantage
- Basic knowledge of POS systems and inventory software
