What You'll Do

As a Special Education Teacher with Parallel, your key responsibilities will include:

  • Remotely providing special education supports to students who are suspended or expelled, and delivering compensatory education when necessary.
  • Coordinating with parents and students to schedule times and types of services needed, and developing individualized education plans (IEPs) that meet their unique needs.
  • Providing case management services to students in your assigned school district, and working closely with teachers and parents to ensure seamless support.
  • Developing lesson plans aimed at improving reading and writing skills, based on individual students' neuro-developmental findings.
  • Administering screening, progress monitoring, diagnostic, and outcomes measures to track student progress and inform instruction.
  • Educating families on what they can do to support their child's learning, and creating roadmaps for support.
  • Maintaining complete documentation and records of sessions, according to in-house policies.

What You'll Need

To succeed in this role, you'll need:

  • An active special education license in the state of Illinois.
  • Several years of experience teaching and working with diverse student populations, with a specialty in math (Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Geometry).
  • Ability to differentiate reading strategies for specific learners, and experience teaching systematic phonics-based reading programs such as Orton Gillingham or Wilson.
  • Understanding of neuropsychological thought and how it plays a role in a student's learning, with practical experience working with children in an educational setting.
  • Excellent communication skills, specifically the ability to communicate with children of different ages and from different cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Comfort with conducting sessions via virtual meeting platforms, and a private workspace with a secure internet connection.
  • At least 1 year of hands-on tutoring experience in the areas of reading and writing, with a strong track record of supporting students with learning differences.
