Job Summary

As a Set Extension Artist, you will utilize your expertise in current CG tools, combined with your strong artistic skills, to seamlessly extend digital environments in a 3D world. You will work closely with our team to create stunning set extensions, matte paintings, and environments that transport audiences to new and imaginative worlds.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Execute layered, pre-lit, view-dependent artworks that flawlessly integrate with fully CG environments
  • Collaborate with environment teams and Creation Originators to elaborately extend environments for our projects
  • Create backgrounds, scenes, and environments in a 3D world using digital painting and rendering software like Maya, Photoshop, Nuke, Houdini, Clarisse, and more
  • Extrapolate art direction: design, architectural style, lighting, and graphics that adhere to the Creation Architects' overall vision
  • Support the technical aspects of the work created
  • Work closely with the Art Division, Design, Modeling, Look Development, and Lighting teams
  • Interpret concept artwork and color keys into adapted yet reasonable final images
  • Design environments for a shot based on extrapolation of more generalized concept artwork
  • Create entire shot extensions from scratch
  • Model on a case-by-case basis, particularly complex terrain generation
  • Texture and shader generation as needed
  • Lighting of self-produced 3D assets as well as existing show resources using Dlight, Maya, and Hyperion
  • Production of fully realized high-resolution HDR digital matte paintings
  • Formation of fully composited set extensions in Nuke using 3D projections, creative compositing, and post-production motion blur and DOF
  • Take art direction from various sources and collaborate with multiple departments to achieve the final shot
  • Delivery of definite frames to the lighting division

Requirements:

  • Four-year college education or equivalent experience
  • Proficient experience required, including animation experience preferred
  • High skill level in painting, composition, perspective, and color theory
  • Understands a 2.5D workflow with multiple projection cameras and broad knowledge of both 2D and 3D workflows and thinking
  • Excellent artistic abilities with a willingness to learn new workflows
  • Broad knowledge of Macintosh OSX and Linux and software like Photoshop, Maya, Nuke, and various renderers
  • Ability to work iteratively in a fluid and fast-paced environment, take direction effectively, and participate as a member of a highly collaborative team
  • Desirable up-and-coming artists would have supplemental art skills or come from a generalist background
  • Broad knowledge of realistic lighting and materials
  • Desirable background in custom drawing and painting
  • A broad comprehension of shot and painting organization, with ideal knowledge of cinematography
  • Strong comprehension of photography and its phrasings
  • Capacity to solve complex problems in a highly creative manner
